The display, particularly in the first half, was not the best from United, but a pick up in pace after the restart put Ajax under increasing pressure and Sir Alex Ferguson's men eventually managed to break the deadlock through Young, who prior to his goal had been, along with fellow United winger Nani, disappointing.
The game also saw the welcome return of the young Tom Cleverley in the midfield who played alongside Michael Carrick for the first half. He was substituted after United's first goal early in the second half by Paul Scholes, who was able as usual, to keep possession and the one goal lead.
Antonio Valencia - a winger in superb form at present - came on for Young, and began the move which led to Hernandez's goal and United's second. However, in the build up to the goal, the Ecuadorian picked up and injury which meant he had to be substituted for Danny Welbeck.
The convincing win by two clear goals relieves a great deal of pressure from Manchester United as they head into the second leg at Old Trafford. It may be a chance to rest some key players and introduce some younger players into the first team in Europe to gain some valuable experience.
